The leading Panzer IVs approached B Company with a friendly arm waving from the turret. This ruse worked, as the earlier ‘engagement’ with British tanks led to unquestioning caution. Consequently, ‘the ‘‘friendly’’ tank’s wave was followed up by three rounds of rapid fire, which killed the crew of an anti-tank gun.’ The second of the section’s 6-pounder guns hit the panzer on its turret but failed to knock it out. At least two more panzers broke cover around B Company’s defensive position. Behind the panzers came the German infantry.

The German attack on B Company was led by 130 Lehr Reconnaissance Battalion, with a mix of half-tracks, armoured cars, its attached panzers and probably reinforcements from 130 Lehr panzer pioneers. Due to the difficulty of armour crossing the Aure from the east and a lack of cover, the Germans knew from previous experience that the attack would inevitably be broken up by Allied artillery. Consequently, the attack was launched from the south and south-west where there was far more cover.
